Terrariums

Terrarium Update

Alex and Kentaro's terrariums plants are surviving after a week! Kentaro's terrarium is still misty and damp. Last time Kentaro's plants were all shriveled like a dead plant but now it is surviving. Lots of moss is growing on the damp soil. There are lots of dead leafs on the back of the fern. Alex's terrarium is moldy, misty, damp and dripping water. Alex and Kentaro's plants are green and healthy.

All the terrariums are misty and really cloudy. This is called condensation. The water vapor is staying inside the jar and is cycling through the water cycle. Next it will precipitate and the plants will get water so that they can survive. It is really cool to see how the water cycle works inside our jars.

Canoe Paddling at Kualoa Beach Park 6/23/14

This Monday we went to Kualoa Beach Park. While we were canoe paddling, we were supposed to count to ten and say, "Hut! Hou!" It was fun, but it made our arms tired. After we said "Hut! Hou!" we were suppose to switch sides. After paddling, we got to go sailing. This time we could just sit down and relax. We got splashed by the water and ended up getting really wet. When we were sailing we got to look outside of the canoe and see the reef and look at all the pretty coral. One of us saw a turtle. One of the leaders had to control the sail. Sometimes it is a hard job because if it is very windy, the leader has to pull the rope very tight or the sail won't catch and the canoe won't move. It was an amazing field trip.

Our favorite parts were sailing the canoe and seeing the turtle. We both had lots of fun and wish we could go back!

Worm Composting and Gardening

Worm Composting

The other day we got to feed the worms. We had to bring food for it every day and we tore up newspaper and put it in the worm bin. We learned that the worms eat the newspaper too. We also learned that they need to stay in the wet environment and they do not like sunlight (worms are photophobic) so when you open the lid they will burrow into the soil. Also, they like to to eat rotten food, like apples and spinach. They are decomposers, do not eat each other, and they lay up to 1000 eggs in 6 months.  The things that like to eat worms are humans, birds, pigs and rats.

Gardening

Last week Tuesday we made a garden with kale, lettuce, mixed greens, and even basil! The first half of the class had to dig up things like weeds and nut grass and then the other half of the class did all the planting. Every day, someone has to water the plants to keep them healthy and so bugs do not eat them, like snails and slugs. Plants need sunlight and water to survive. Fertilizer also helps. We made natural fertilizer by digging up the vines that used to be planted in the garden and chopping them up. Then we put them inside the dirt. Our plants are doing well so far! They are growing and we hope they continue to grow more so we can harvest it at the end of the summer!

Block Printing with Aerin and Noah

Yesterday we did block printing for our legends that we wrote. First, we did our own sketch on a paper that illustrated part of our legend.

These were the steps to block printing:

  1. We retraced our sketch with a dowel (wooden stick that looks like a pencil) onto a foam board.
  2. We went to a table that we had to choose which color we want. The paint colors were red, yellow, green, and white.
  3. We rolled the color we picked on our foam board. It was important not to put too much paint on the board because otherwise we would not see our design.
  4. We got a piece of brown paper.
  5. We put our foam board with the paint on a plastic template.
  6. We got a roller and put the brown paper on top of the foam board and rolled it.
  7. After we gently took off the brown paper, and got a nice print!

Noah: My legend is about how the mountains were made. They were made when water rose and the ground had an earthquake and it formed big mountains.

Aerin: My legend is about the Punahou Spring. It was created when there was a drought in Hawaii. A daughter named Ashley imagined her friend saying, "Pull out your hala tree and you will find a river." Ashley told her dad about her dream, but the dad does not believe her. However, the dad says "She has never lied before." So they pull out their hala tree and found a spring. The mom says "Ka Punahou, water!"

Hakipu'u Hike

Hakipu'u Hike and Cows

Hi! Our names are Kendall and Renon. We are going to tell you about our Hakipu'u hike. It was fun hiking for both of us. The guiders said that there were some cows last time! We didn't see any cows, though. They also warned us about the cow poop... and they were right!!!  DISGUSTING!!! On the way to the look-out point at the end of the hike, there were two streams that we had to cross. On the way back, Kumu Ian showed us some hawaiian plants and told us some legends. The way back was a shortcut. It was really steep and dangerous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But also fun! We also had to cross a muddy field. Luckily a little while after that, we crossed a stream and washed our feet off in the cool water (air conditioning for our feet). The sun was hot!

We learned a lot about how Punahou helps to maintain a part of Kualoa Ranch. We also learned how the old Hawaiians survived. We got to see an old taro patch that Kumu Ian pointed out for us. Kumu Ian also showed us the place where the water came from under the tree. Kendall's favorite part was crossing the stream and getting her feet wet. Renon's favorite part was seeing where the water came down! She liked the sound.

See ya!!! :) ;)

Block Printing 6/24/14

Block Printing for Our Legend
by Noah Yang

During art, we did block printing. First, in class we had to draw a picture for our legend. Then you need to get a foam and trace your drawing over the foam paper. Then you need a piece of paper because you are going to paint over the the foam thingy. Then you get a thing that you measure the foam thingy and piece of paper over the foam thingy and then when you roll it then pick it up there you have it a nice painted picture.

My legend was about how the drought ended in O'ahu and how a girl got so mad that she blew up and then a spring showed up. I drew a picture of the man finding the spring in the cave.

I felt proud because I had a complete picture. It was fun because I got to paint my picture. I would want to do that again because it was fun to paint and see how it turns out. I like how it turned out because it looked like the exact same picture but painted. I colored it red, green, and white.

Block Printing with William

Block Printing and Legend

In art, we made these sketches of a legend and we traced it on the styrofoam with these sticks, called dowels. After that, we got some paint and spread it on the styrofoam. Once the paint was on, we got a piece of paper and put the styrofoam onto a plastic board facing up. Then, we put the paper on top of the styrofoam. We rolled the paper and styrofoam together. When we lifted the paper up, the picture was attached to the paper! I did 4 colors: red , white, green, and yellow. While I waited for everyone to finish, I drew a picture of Batman and Thor.

My legend was about these five guys starving in Hawaii, and then the volcano erupted and hit the trees. The guys turned the trees into a canoe and some paddles, and jumped on it and saw a fish on their fishing rod. They thought it was something from the Gods, so they thanked them and ate happily ever after.

Manoa Falls

Last week Wednesday we went to Manoa Falls.  We saw a lot of things. One thing we saw was a bird from Africa. We also got to see the waterfall, a toad and mushrooms. We saw different plants like ferns and mountain apples. On the way up, it was raining a lot. When we were there, we had to write a poem about Manoa Falls and draw a picture for it. On the way down we had to collect plants for our terrariums. We got back to the Punahou school, and we put cinders and soil in our jars. After, we put the plants inside our terrariums. When we went back to the classroom we got a paper to write about how much moisture was in our terrariums. We are doing the terrariums to learn about the water cycle. It was really fun except when it rained.

Kualoa Beach canoe/paddling/sailing

Kualoa Beach
By: Keiichiro, Muku and Emali

As you can see our name is Muku, Keiichiro and Emali.
Yesterday we went to Kualoa Beach Park.
All of us went canoe paddling in different groups and some of us stayed on the
shore and they had to wait until the people who were in one group came back from canoe
paddling. Also we went back to the shore so the other group could go canoe paddling. Then
after we went to go sailing and all we had to do is just sit back and relax and just look at the
pretty rocks and the pretty reef that was underneath us. We never got to go out
to the reef but we were lucky enough to go over all the rocks and the big reef. We all had a lot of fun, and enjoyed sailing a lot because it went so fast.

HAKIPU'U

Hakipu'u
By: Cable and Shun

When we went on a hike on Friday we went to the Hakipu'u.
There we saw many native plants and natural habitats, but we didn't see cows.
Kumu Ian told us about the rocks and the streams.
Some people even put their feet in the stream.
Once we got to the top Kumu Ian told us the legend of Hakipu'u and the Mo'o.
Hi'iaka and a giant Mo'o (lizard) got into a big fight, but finally Hi'iaka chopped off the Mo'o's tail and threw it into the ocean which is now the small island with the name Mokoli'i or Chinaman's Hat.
Kumu Ian also chanted in Hawaiian before we left.
In the end, instead of walking down the long way again we walked down a steep hill.

Adventures in Manoa and Making a Terrarium

Manoa Falls

 By: Kaau and Kyle

Aloha, I'm Kyle and my name is Kaau. At Manoa falls our class saw a lot of bamboo. It took us about one hour to get to the top. At the top of Manoa we saw a lot of plants near the waterfall. When we were on our way down we gathered plants for our terrariums. It was rainy but when it rains it's also really beautiful, we would both do it again.

A Terrarium is for plants like a aquarium. The first thing to making a terrarium is to get a jar, be sure it has a cover. The second thing to make a terrarium  is to put in one small layer of cinder in the jar. The third thing to making a terrarium is to get plants, be sure to get it's root. The fourth thing is to put a layer of dirt enough to fit your plant's root. The fifth thing is to plant your  plant. The sixth thing is to water your plants then cover the jar and now you have your own terrarium .

Ahupua'a

About Keiichiro and Kosei

My name is Kosei I am doing a blog about Ahupua'a.
Ahupua'a is a place where old Hawaiian communities lived. They were nice communities where they shared all the materials and used their talents to make and share food with each other for survival. Hawaiians divided roles hunted, some fished, while others cooked, built materials and houses, or got water.

Hi! My name is Keiichiro Sato. I was born on April 17th, 2004. My hobbies are basketball and soccer.

What I learned about  Ahupua'a is Ahupua'a means community. I also learned about that old Hawaiians helped each other and shared foods. And some people was good at
fishing, some people was good at buliding that is how they helped.

Scavenger Hunt 6 - 16 - 2014 And Gardening 6 - 17 - 2014

Hello! Our names are Ashley,Caetlin, and Cate. Caetlin is going to 5th grade, Ashley is going to 4th grade, and Cate is also going to 4th grade. Caetlin goes to Maryknoll School, Ashley goes to Waikele Elementary School, and Cate goes to Maemae Elementary School. Ashley likes light blue, Caetlin likes fuchsia (pink), and Cate likes blue.  We are all 9 years old Caetlin's birthday is July 13, Ashley's birthday is on St. Patrick's Day, or March 17, and Cate's birthday is on June 16th.

Caetlin and Ashley had a scavenger hunt today and we found 13 out of 15 objects.

Today we had a scavenger hunt. We each found 13 out of 15 items. We weren't able to find the last two, which was something that came from the sea and a creature that isn't an insect.

On our 2nd day we worked on a garden by breaking up big pieces of dirt , making natural fertilizer, and pulling out weeds. When we pulled out the nut grass, we had to get the nut in order to stop the weed from multiplying and growing.

About Us and Gardening

About Us

Hi!!! We are buddies...Our names are Emali and Sasha. We both are 9 years old and we both hate frosting. Now you know us more and that we really, really, really hate frosting because it is disgusting!

Now we are going to be talking about our class gardening in one of the Punahou School gardens in Winne. Kumu Blanchette is helping us grow all kinds of vegetables: like lettuce, beans, kale, basil, and all other vegetables that we have never even eaten in our whole entire life (which is not very long). Now we are getting hungry because we are talking about eating.
