About Plants Native to Hawaii and The Canoe Plants
Canoe Plants and Plants Native to Hawaii
Hi, this is Kentaro, Kosei, and Kyle. Today we will be telling you about a plant native to Hawaii and a plant that was brought here by canoe in ancient Hawaii.
The difference between native and canoe plants are that not all canoe plants are native to Hawaii. Canoe plants were used mainly for the canoe. But the native plants are used for a variety of things like medicine. So the Hawaiians used all of their resources to survive.
The name for the native plant is the 'olohua. Its English name is American Black Night Shade and its scientific name is Solanum americium. It can grow up to 4 ft. tall. The green berries were poisonous, but when the black berries were fully ripe, they were sometimes use as medicine. This plant is an indigenous plant, which means that the 'Olohua is only found in Hawaii.
Now we will tell you about the canoe plant. Both the English name and the Hawaiian name is olona and it's scientific name is Touchardia Latifola. The olona is green and soft. It was used as string or ropes to tie the canoe parts together. The ropes were made from the from the fiber inside the plant. The olona is also indigenous.
