Plants in Hawaii

Last week we learned about the difference between native Hawaiian plants and canoe plants. The coconut traveled to Hawaii on the ocean currents. Because the coconut floated to Hawaii people started collecting coconuts and they would replant it so they could always have access to coconuts. Another plant is the kalo plant, it can be used as food and decoration. We eat the kalo as poi and use the leaves to make lau lau. The hala tree, another native plant, is easily recognized by its supporting base, or big roots. The roots help to hold up the tree against strong winds.
Another plant is the banana tree, in Hawaiian is called a mai'a. It is used for baking. Noah's favorite plant in the garden is the lettuce plant. He also likes kale and kalo because of the smell and uses. Noah's least favorite plant in the garden is the nut grass because it is a weed and makes the garden look ugly. Today when we went to the garden we saw an unusual flower growing on one of the plants. Learning about the native plants and the canoe plants was fun because we got to see all of the different kinds of plants.
