Pinch Pot Reef Art

Why did we make pinch pots?  We made these to show our understanding of the coral reef.

1. First, we used a cup to make the base. We covered it with newspaper. Then, we covered the
newspaper with clay. We cut off the extra clay at the base to use to sculpt animals and sea life for our reef.
2. We had form the clay into fish. Before going to art, we sketched at least 10 fish and sea creatures
(including coral).
3. We had to score our clay and use slip to "glue" our fishes and sea creatures to the base. In order to score, we made a tic tac toe with the stick. Then, we put water or slip on the clay.

4. We could put some fish and coral on the top of the bowl or on the side of it. Then you have to check your work and put detail and texture on the fish and other reef life. For example, for the turtle, you could put lines on his shell. You could put details on your coral reef. If the clay was dry, we needed to put it in the bag and get new clay. This is because if it is not wet, it will not stick to your reef. When we were done, we checked to see if our clay animals stuck on good.

5. You remove your reef pot from the cup that is wrapped in the newspaper and then let your clay sit and dry. Then, we will have it fired and we can glaze it!
